Alexander Galchenyuk was born on February 12, 1994, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. His parents, Alexei and Natalia Galchenyuk, were both professional athletes. His father played hockey for Belarus in the Soviet Union, while his mother played handball. Galchenyuk began playing hockey at a young age and quickly showed his exceptional talent. He moved to Belarus at the age of 16 to further develop his skills. In 2012, he was drafted third overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.
