Parts of the New Orleans metro area elevated to a Flash Flood Watch after more than 5 inches of rain fell overnight

The National Weather Service has now extended a Flash Flood Warning for portions of Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard Parishes until 4:30 p.m. CDT this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service:

  • Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area
  • Expect major flooding in low-lying areas - especially near small streams, creeks, and drainage areas
  • Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads
  • Most flood deaths occur in vehicles

The NWS advises that heavy rain will continue to be possible through this evening.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for flash flooding. Be prepared to act quickly if flooding is observed or if a Flash Flood Warning is issued. For more information on flash floods, please visit the NWS website: https://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
